Ultraviolet and Visible Radiation

Ultraviolet and visible radiation, when absorbed by matter, increase the energy of the outer shell electrons in molecules. When this occurs, the molecules are said to be in an electronically excited state and are able to participate in photochemical reactions. Photochemistry will be described in more detail later.
