Boiling Point
The boiling points of organic molecules vary depending upon the alkyl
group and the functional group in the molecule. This applet allows you
to vary parts of a series of molecules and observe the changes in the resulting
compoundsí boiling points. The boiling points are plotted vs. molar mass
for each compound.

INSTRUCTIONS
You can explore the effects of varying either the functional group for
molecules with the same base alkyl group, or of varying the nature of the
alkyl group for a series of molecules with the same functional group.
- Select to vary either the functional group or the alkyl group by clicking
on one of the option buttons at the top left.

Choose the base molecular fragment (either a single alkyl group or a single
functional group).

Vary the group selected to vary in order to explore the effects on boiling
point of the molecule and it's structure.
