FAVORITE FIELD TRIPS

Field work can be tiring--even online--so we've scouted out the top three trips for you. If you choose to go it alone, there's a complete list of trips below.

ONEONTA TO THE HUDSON RIVER VALLEY ONLINE FIELDTRIP
Follow this electronic road log of a geology class trip and you'll travel back some 400 million years in earth history. Along the way you'll learn the basics of rock formation and plate tectonics. You'll also get to know the students on the trip, at least by sight. They don't say much but, maybe for that reason, it's easy to identify with them.

THE VIRTUAL CAVE
You think popcorn comes with butter? Think again. This trip gives "popcorn," "showerheads," and "soda straws" new meanings, by locating them on the walls of caves. The beauty of the trip is that it plunges you underground into an "ideal" cave. It's not exactly Plato's ideal, but the variety of rock formations shown here makes for almost perfect virt-tripping. A full listing of commercial caves in the States completes the site.

JURASSIC REEF PARK
A virtual tour through a Jurassic-aged reef. The trip begins on a sandy beach, under some palm trees, appealing to the romantic/beachcomber in us all. But don't doubt the quality or quantity of data here. Beneath the tropical sheen, this site is solid information: the history of reef-building, the role of reefs in a global environment, a geo-glossary. In English or German.
