Example 2

Solving an Equation

Let's solve the equation (8x - 2)(3x + 4) = (4x + 3)(6x - 1).  We'll use a graphical method.

Go to the "Y=" window and put in Y1 = (8x - 2)(3x + 4) and Y2 = (4x + 3)(6x - 1).

Graph the function starting off with the standard window (go to "ZOOM" and choose "ZoomStd."

This picture is not very helpful so we will change our window some.  Use the settings shown to the right.

Press <u>"GRAPH."

The two graphs seem to cross somewhere in the first quadrant.  We'll resize the window again.  Use the settings to the right.

Press <u>"GRAPH."
