Calculator Basics For The Texas Instruments 83, 85/86, and 89/92/Voyage 200 Calculators - Part 1

We will begin with some very basic discussion of calculator features.  One quick note on notation.  When these notes have a symbol or word in angle brackets (eg. <MATH>) it will mean the calculator button with that symbol or word on it.

The <2nd> button

On each calculator, you will notice that most of the keys on the keypad, in addition to the command on the key itself, will have one or two more commands.  On the 83, 85/86 and 89, you will see the <2nd> button near the top left corner of the keypad.  On the 92/Voyage 200, on the bottom row of the QWERTY keypad and a second one at the top left corner of the keypad on the right side of the calculator.  In each case notice that its color scheme is different from that of the other keys on the keyboard.  For any command above a key that is in the color of the <2nd> key, you must first press <2nd> before pressing the button corresponding to the command.

The <¨> and <ALPHA> buttons

On the 83, 85/86 and 89, you will see (below <2nd>) the <ALPHA>.  On the 92/Voyage 200, on the QWERTY keyboard next to <2nd> you will see the <¨> button.  Both of these buttons are used in the same way as <2nd> to utilize commands (above keys) that are in the same color as the <¨> or <ALPHA> buttons.
