Calculator Basics For The Texas Instruments 83, 85/86, and 89/92/Voyage 200 Calculators - Part 3

Window

Each of the calculators has a screen where the Graph window size and configuration can be set.  In each case you will see settings named Xmin, Xmax, Ymin, Ymax, Xscl, and Yscl.  Sometimes there are some others but these are the main ones.

  • Xmin - gives the smallest x-value that will be displayed on the graph
  • Xmax - gives the largest x-value that will be displayed on the graph
  • Ymin - gives the smallest y-value that will be displayed on the graph
  • Ymax - gives the largest y-value that will be displayed on the graph
  • There will be unit markings on each axis.  Xscl tells how many units each marking represents on the x-axis. Yscl tells how many units each marking represents on the y-axis.

Zoom

Each of the calculators also has a screen called "zoom."  The options in zoom will automatically size the graph window.  The particular zoom choice will depend on what you are trying to do.  In most cases, it is a good idea to start with Zoom Standard which sets Xmin = Ymin = -10, Xmax = Ymax = 10, and Xscl = Yscl = 1.
