What's an eBook?
An eBook, or electronic book, is a digital book that you can read on a computer screen. We support Adobe eBook readers for the PC and Mac (About the Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader). Some eBooks can also be read on an electronic device such as a Palm or other handheld computer.

How do I read an eBook? What is an eBook reader, and where can I get one?
To read an eBook, you must have an eBook reader on your computer. A reader is the software that must be installed on the computer or device to which you download your eBook in order to read it. You can purchase an eBook from Wadsworth at any time, but you must have the eBook reader installed on your computer before you purchase or download an eBook. You can download Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader for free.

Note: The Acrobat eBook Reader is different than the Acrobat Reader.

Do I need any special hardware to run the Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader?
The Acrobat eBook Reader 2.2 runs on any laptop or desktop PC running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000 and on Macintosh computers running Mac OS 9 or later. There's no need to buy any special hardware to read eBooks. For additional support, visit Adobe's Acrobat eBook Reader support site.

How do I order an eBook?
Instructors: Contact your sales representative to place an order for your course.

Students: You can purchase an eBook at our online catalog. Install the Reader on your computer before you purchase. Soon after you place your eBook order, a hyperlink will be provided to download your eBook. Simply click that link, and the eBook will be downloaded to the reader installed on your computer.

Can instructors request an exam copy of an eBook?
No. Exam copies of printed products can be obtained through your sales representative.

How do I install the Adobe eBook Reader?
Instructions are provided during the installation of the eBook Reader and are available at the Adobe web site. Use version 2.2 or higher for full features. If you do not have the Adobe eBook Reader, you can download it now. You should install the reader on your computer before you purchase or download an eBook.

Can I install an eBook on more than one computer?
No. As part of the copy protection, an eBook can only be installed on one hard drive, and comes with a single user license.

Can I order multiple copies of an eBook at once?
No. Unfortunately, we can only accept orders for a quantity of one. However, you can order several different eBooks at the same time.

Is there a time limit on eBooks? What happens to an eBook when I'm done reading it?
There is no time limit for Wadsworth eBooks. Your eBook will remain on your computer and available for unlimited viewing unless you delete it. Since you own the eBook, you can access it from the Library that is included with the Acrobat eBook Reader and read it as often as desired.

Do I have to pay shipping and handling charges for eBooks?
No. You do not have to pay shipping and handling charges for eBooks.

Can I pay for an eBook with a check?
No. eBooks can only be purchased with a credit card at this time.

How long will it take to download an eBook?
The download time depends on the size of the eBook you order and the speed of the modem on your computer. Download times for an average-sized eBook according to connection speed are as follows:
* T1 = 50 seconds
* DSL/cable modem/ISDN = 10 minutes
* 56K = 24 minutes
* 28.8K = 48 minutes

Can I print my eBook?
Because of copyright restrictions, printing of eBooks is limited to 100 pages every 10 days. Where printing is allowed, your eBook reader's print function will be enabled.

What is the return policy for eBooks?

eBooks are nonreturnable. However, if you are having technical difficulties, please visit our help page or Adobe's Acrobat eBook Reader support site.

What if I have trouble downloading an eBook or a reader?

If you have trouble downloading an eBook or a reader, visit our help page or Adobe's Acrobat eBook Reader support site.

Is Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader the same as Adobe Acrobat Reader?

No. Both are unique software programs that have different purposes. Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader reads both eBooks and PDF documents. Adobe Acrobat Reader can read PDF documents only, not eBooks.

Can I read eBooks on my Pocket PC or Palm?
No, not at this time. Adobe is working versions for these devices.

Can I read eBooks with something other than the Adobe Reader?
Brooks/Cole and Wadsworth Publishing eBooks can only be read using the Adobe eBook Reader.

What types of computers does the Adobe eBook Reader work on?

We carry eBook formats that are compatible with the Macintosh and Windows operating systems.

System Requirements For the PC:
The Acrobat eBook Reader works on any PC running Windows Me, Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows 2000, or Windows NT 4.0, or Windows XP. The Acrobat eBook Reader requires Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.x or 5.x (standard with Windows Me and Windows 98). It runs best on computers with at least 32MB of memory and at least an SVGA color display (800x600). It requires about 12MB of hard disk space for installation. Most eBooks you download require an average of about 1MB of disk space apiece.

System Requirements For the Mac:
The Acrobat eBook Reader works on any Mac with a PowerPC processor and Mac OS software 9.0 or 9.1. The Acrobat eBook Reader requires Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.5 or later, AOL 5.0 or later, or Netscape Communicator 4.75 or later. It runs best on computers with QuickTime version 4. It requires about 12MB of hard disk space for installation and additional disk space for eBooks you acquire.

Also see the Adobe website.

Why should I read eBooks?
There are a number of advantages to reading eBooks. First, you can read them immediately, without having to wait for the title to be shipped to you. You can take them with you anywhere you take your laptop, and the Adobe reader offers features like highlighting and search.

Won't it strain my eyes to read on the screen?
The Acrobat eBook Reader allows you to "sharpen" the text to make reading on the screen easier and more comfortable.

Can I order eBooks by phone or through a sales rep?
Because of the digital nature of this product, you can only order eBooks online. Instructors can order books for courses through their Wadsworth sales rep.

Can I send an eBook as a gift?
At this time, you can not lend eBooks nor send them as gifts. The eBook you purchase can only be downloaded to your computer.

Can I Upgrade?
Upgrade Installation for Former Glassbook Customers

In previous versions, the Acrobat eBook Reader was called the Glassbook® Reader™ and had an additional companion product, the Plus Reader. If you already have a version of the Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader, you can install this latest version of Acrobat eBook Reader and preserve your existing books and documents (more info here). Note to Version 2.0 Plus users: If you purchased the Plus Reader, your American Heritage Dictionary will be preserved and used instead of the new Proximity dictionary.

  1. Before you install the Acrobat eBook Reader, ensure that you have not set the Reader or Plus Reader to be the preferred viewer for PDF documents:

    * Start the Glassbook Reader.
    * Click the Menu button and then click Preferences to display the Preferences dialog box.
    * Clear the Use the Glassbook Reader as the Primary PDF Reader check box.
    * Click OK or Accept
    * Close the Preferences dialog box.
    * Quit the Glassbook Reader.

  2. Do not remove (uninstall) the Glassbook Reader.
  3. Download the Acrobat eBook Reader and begin the installation program.
  4. When the installation program asks in which directory to install the Acrobat eBook Reader, the default choice is the directory where the Glassbook Reader is installed.
  5. Complete the installation.
    After you perform an upgrade installation, your computer is likely to have two desktop icons, one for the Glassbook Reader and one for the Acrobat eBook Reader. Your computer is also likely to have two corresponding sets of commands on the Windows Programs menu. Both sets of icons and commands correctly start the Acrobat eBook Reader. You may safely remove the Glassbook Reader icons and commands.

Why must I activate or certify my reader?
Activation or certification of your unique copy of an eBook reader is a one-time process that is necessary if you plan on buying eBooks. The process is similar to that which you might follow when you get a new credit card--it allows you to make transactions. More specifically, it allows the eBook reader software to work with encryption systems that protect publishers' copyrights.

What eBooks Can't Do
Although eBooks offer many advantages over print books, there are some things that you cannot do with an eBook. eBooks from Brooks/Cole can not be copied, loaned, or given as gifts. You can print only 100 pages every 10 days.
